Transcription Process & Conventions
Transcription is the process of turning segments into visual scripts. The main benefit of this is that it allows us to store our segmenting choices outside of our limited short-term memory.
You will practice transcription using a modified version of the international phonetic alphabet. Since IPA uses symbols outside of the normal alphabet, there will be a bit of a learning curve to the transcription process.
In the video below, I discuss the basic conventions of my sound transcription system, as well as a process you can use for typing.
Sound Transcription Practice
To help you learn these new IPA symbols as quickly as possible, we are going to use the same phoneme word lists from earlier. This way, you can write the same script multiple times in a row in different words.
Commonly confused sounds and scripts will be grouped with each other so the difference becomes more evident to you.
Since our main goal is to practice “movement transcription”, you should only practice the sound transcription as long as you need to become comfortable with the scripts. Then when you are comfortable, you can move on.
