Velum

💡
The velum is a sheet of soft tissue hanging off of the bone of your hard palate. There are muscles extending above and behind it that pull it up and back to close the nasal passage. This muscle is active all the time in speech when we make oral vowels. In some languages, like French and Portuguese, the velar muscles alternate rapidly between relaxed and contracted state all the time to create the nasal vowels whenever they occur. In Spanish and German, there are no nasal vowels, so mastering this speech articulator is not as relevant for those learning that language. Nevertheless, it is still worthwhile to develop some basic awareness of it. Once you feel you have successfully isolated the velum, share a loom of yourself doing it to your small group or #practice channel.
