Tension

The most fundamental sense is the Kinesthetic sense. This is the sense that lets us know where the various parts of our body are in space. Our body parts are moved and stabilized through the contraction of muscle fibers. When muscles are contracted, stretch receptors in our muscles detect it, and this is how we become aware of our body posture and movement. The tongue is itself a collection of various muscles. Because there are so many, and because we move them all the time in complex ways without thinking, it can seem a bit overwhelming at first to wrap the mind around the tongue. But in the exercises below, I walk you through some exercises to isolated the contraction and feeling of each tongue muscle. This heightened general awareness and control over the tongue muscles will help you next week when we start to reverse engineer the movements of your target language. If you’re not comfortable sharing videos of your tongue doing weird stuff (understandable haha), then just write about your experience practicing these things in the #reflect channel.
