The Nature of Syllable Stress (15 min)
The videos below deal with the nature of stress in speech, and how stressed syllables help us more easily frame our perceptions. Watch both videos, then post your 3 biggest takeaways in the
#learn
channel. 2B
Syncing Claps with Syllable Stress (30 min)
In this exercise, you will revisit the audio from last week, and focus on clapping in sync with the stressed syllables. The phrases are fully transcribed, with the stressed syllables emphasized in the text. As you clap along, move your eyes along the stressed syllables.
Because I cut the loops to fall on a perfect musical meter, this will feel like a musical clapping exercise. Just before, however, try to fall into the natural timing of the syllables, instead of imposing one on top.
First practice a set by watching my "Example Submission" video, then attempting the exercise yourself. Once you feel you have it, record your own Loom video performing the whole set, and post your recording in the
#practice
channel. ‣

Rhythmic Speaking (15 min)
In this exercise, you will find text in your native language and practice speaking it out loud to a metronome, with the aim of aligning the stresses of the word with the beat. You may use poetry or prose. And you main do a simple rhythm or something more complex.
The performance must be at least 60 seconds, but you can go as long as you like. When you're done recording yourself, post it to the
#apply
channel, along with some commentary on what the experience was like for you. 2D
Rhythmic Echoing (15 min)
In this exercise, you will practice listening to native speaker audio, catching the stress pattern of a random phrase, and then echoing the stress pattern with your voice and hand gesture.
Record yourself grabbing random phrases like this for at least 3 minutes, and then post your recording to the
#apply
channel.
